Frequent false starts were presumably to give the engineer a chance to ensure the tape was rolling and levels were properly set. No editing or normalization was done at all in an attempt to completely preserve the contents of the original reels. The highlights of this recording, in my opinion, are in the "conversation" section with Tommy (disc 3), in which the true historical value of this recording presents itself.
